Straight Answers to Common Questions
How much does a new roof cost in Cincinnati?
Roof replacements generally run anywhere from about $10,000 to $25,000. Where yours lands depends on the size of the roof, how steep it is and the shingle you choose. If rotted decking turns up, it’s priced per 4×8 sheet of plywood, or by the linear foot on older homes with 1×6 board decking.
How much do replacement windows cost?
It depends mostly on how many windows you’re replacing and the material. Vinyl can run from roughly $5,000 for just a few windows up to about $50,000. Wood runs about twice as much as vinyl, roughly $15,000 to $75,000.
Should I repair my roof or replace it?
Tom starts by asking how long you plan to stay in the house and how much life the roof has left. If you’ll be there longer than the roof is likely to last, replacement may make more sense. Some roofs also reach a point where repair isn’t practical, such as when the shingles have lost enough granules to expose the fiberglass mat.
Can you repair my siding instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. Woodpecker holes and rot are among the siding repairs we handle. But if a repair would only be temporary, replacement may make more sense. On partial jobs, removing one part of the wall can also disturb the siding or trim around it.
James Hardie or vinyl siding: what's the difference?
The biggest difference is the look. James Hardie fiber cement is designed to give you more of a wood appearance, which is one reason some neighborhood HOAs allow cedar or Hardie. Vinyl generally costs less. In Tom’s experience, woodpeckers aren’t a problem with either one. Prefinished Hardie gets seven coats of paint at the factory and carries a 15-year finish warranty.
What's the difference between full-frame and pocket window replacement?
A full-frame replacement removes the whole old window, including the frame, and the inside gets retrimmed. A pocket replacement installs the new window into the existing frame and can preserve decorative interior trim, but you lose some glass area. Tom only uses pocket replacement with existing wood windows, usually when there’s decorative trim worth keeping. Vinyl and metal windows require full-frame replacement.
Is there a best time of year for exterior work?
Construction Solutions installs windows and doors during winter, and James Hardie siding can be installed year-round. Roofing is harder in cold weather, although we still do it.
