Wood, Vinyl or Fiberglass

We install all three. Here is what Tom tells homeowners about the differences.

Wood

Tom says wood windows run about twice the price of vinyl.

Vinyl

We install several vinyl lines.

Fiberglass

A fiberglass window looks like a vinyl window, Tom says, and once it is in the opening you cannot really tell. It is made from fiberglass, which he says is a lot more sturdy than vinyl.

The Brands We Sell

Construction Solutions is not tied to one window manufacturer.

Lines we sell

Pella, Andersen and Marvin are the wood lines. We also sell several vinyl lines.

When price is what drives the decision, Tom says he usually goes with Pella.

Full Frame or Pocket Fit

There are two ways to put a replacement window into an existing opening, and the difference is worth understanding before you get quotes. Tom walks through it on every estimate.

What your existing window decides

If we are replacing a vinyl window, Tom says it has to be a full frame. Same with a metal window. Pocket fit is only possible when you are replacing an old wood window.

Full Frame

The window and its frame come out. That means going back and retrimming the inside afterward.

Pocket Fit

The new window goes into the existing frame. Tom says this is the one he usually recommends when the interior trim is very decorative, because that trim never gets touched. The tradeoff is that a pocket fit loses some glass space.

On a Cherry Grove job

The project page describes removing old drafty windows, installing Polaris units, and reframing all of the interior trim “so that we would not lose any glass size on any of the windows.”

What New Windows Cost

Here are the approximate ranges Tom gives homeowners.

Vinyl windows

Roughly $5,000 on the low end if you only want a few done, up to about $50,000.

Wood windows

Maybe $15,000 to $75,000. Tom says wood runs about twice the price of vinyl.

Those are wide ranges, and Tom’s point is that it depends on the volume.

What moves the number

Two things: how many windows you are doing, and whether you go vinyl, wood or fiberglass.

How a Window Job Runs

Lead Times

From signing to installation, Tom says vinyl is usually about one month. Wood is at least two months.

We Work Inside the House

Windows are the one job where we need to get inside your house. Everything else we do stays outside.

About 15 Windows

Tom says a typical job is about 15 windows on average.
