Why Homeowners Ask About James Hardie
Here is what comes up when homeowners ask Tom about it.
The Look of Wood
Tom says the biggest benefit is how it looks.
"It looks like wood."
An Option in Some HOA Neighborhoods
Tom says there are neighborhoods with HOAs that will allow cedar or Hardie. If your neighborhood has rules about siding, it is worth checking those before you choose a material.
What Tom Sees Afterward
James Hardie is fiber and cement. Tom says he very rarely gets a call back on it.
From Cedar to James Hardie
Tom points to Cincinnati’s weather variation, moisture and trees when he talks about older siding. With cedar, he says the trouble is that people do not repaint it as often as they need to, and that is where wood siding goes bad.
The house was about 30 years old. We had done part of it in James Hardie about six years earlier, and this time she called about the rest. I came out, looked at everything and put together a bid, and we started about three weeks later. The old cedar came off, and prefinished James Hardie siding and trim went on. We had a lot of guys on the crew for that one, so it took two days.
Styles, Colors and Finish Options
We install James Hardie siding in different styles, colors and finish options. What goes on your house depends on what you want.
Texture
Tom describes the choice as smooth or a wood grain, for the siding and for the trim.
Color
There is a set of in-stock colors that Tom steers most people toward, and a specialty program for colors outside that set. The specialty colors cost more.
Prefinished or Primed
Prefinished costs more up front. Tom’s view is that it does not end up costing more, because with primed siding you are paying someone to paint it.
How We Install James Hardie Siding
Flashing Comes First
Proper flashing is number one, Tom says. James Hardie has its own way of doing things, and Tom says the guys who do the work were trained by James Hardie.
House Wrap on Every Hardie Job
On a Hardie job, the house wrap is James Hardie’s own. Tom says that is what goes on, 100% of the time.
What the Job Covers
A siding job covers the siding and the trim, including all the corner posts and the trim around the windows. Soffit, fascia and freeze board are extras, and they can be added to the job.
What We May Find Behind Old Wood Siding
When old wood siding comes off, whatever is behind it becomes visible.
"Especially with James Hardie, because you're usually tearing off wood. And very often, almost always, you're running into something in there where you have to replace the framing underneath."
Tom is describing old wood siding coming off. He is not saying every house has framing damage.
When We Find Framing That Needs Repair
We point it out to you. Repairing framing is a charge, and it goes on the quote in writing. Once you have approved it, the framing gets repaired rather than covered over.
Approve it. The repair work does not start until you do.
Two Hardie Jobs Where It Happened
The house was clad in Dryvit, a synthetic stucco. A moisture meter had found moisture in at least 30% of the framing underneath. We took all of it off, ran into structural problems, shored everything up, rebuilt entire walls and reframed, then covered it with plywood and house wrap.
Two houses, both wood siding. Complete tear-offs on both, then new James Hardie siding, trim and soffit. Both of them needed framing work.
