The Metal Roofs We Have Installed

Two documented projects, two different products, and two very different buildings.

The Loveland train station, now Bob Rocker's Running Spot, with its new tile roof

Stone-coated steel, Loveland. We installed a new tile roof on the old Loveland train station, built in 1906 and now Bob Rocker’s Running Spot. The product is DECRA tile, a stone-coated steel roofing that imitates an old tile roof.

A Norwood house turned modern farmhouse, with a standing seam metal roof

Standing seam, Norwood. On a full exterior transformation of a neglected house into a modern farmhouse, we installed an Advantage-Lok II metal roof manufactured by Union Corrugating, alongside Polaris siding, Kleer PVC trim and composite decking.

What These Two Products Actually Are

Both are steel. They behave and look nothing alike, and the manufacturers publish specifics worth knowing before you choose.

DECRA tile. Steel with an aluminum-zinc hot dip coating, finished in ceramic-coated stone granules, which is what gives it the tile appearance. DECRA publishes a weight of 150 pounds per square, a 120 mph wind speed warranty, a Class 4 hail rating under UL 2218, and a Class A, B and C fire rating under UL 790. On single-family homes in the US and Canada, DECRA publishes a lifetime limited warranty.

Advantage-Lok II. Union Corrugating classifies this one as an architectural, non-structural standing seam metal roof panel. It is mechanically attached with hidden fasteners to a continuous solid substrate, so there are no exposed screws across the field of the roof. The seam is a one-inch snap lock. Standard panel width is 16 inches, with an 11 and 5/8 inch option. It comes in 26 and 24 gauge Galvalume-coated steel and in aluminum, with a Kynar 500 fluoropolymer finish on the 24 gauge and aluminum options.

Which one suits your house depends mostly on whether you want the roof to read as tile or as metal.

Metal or Asphalt

Most of the roofs we install are asphalt shingle, and for most Cincinnati houses that is still the right answer.

Metal is worth the conversation when you want a roof that reads as tile without a tile roof, when the architecture calls for standing seam, or when you are planning to be in the house long enough for the maths to work.

Tell us which way you are leaning and we will price both.

Metal Roofing Questions

Standing seam panels and stone-coated steel. We installed a DECRA stone-coated steel tile roof on the 1906 Loveland train station, and an Advantage-Lok II standing seam roof by Union Corrugating on a Norwood house.

Not on a standing seam roof like Advantage-Lok II. Union Corrugating builds it to attach with hidden fasteners, so there are no exposed screws across the field of the roof.

Yes, and that is what stone-coated steel is for. DECRA tile is steel finished in ceramic-coated stone granules, made to imitate an old tile roof. It is what we used on the Loveland train station.
