Deck Builders in Cincinnati
New decks in pressure-treated pine, cedar and composite, built across Greater Cincinnati. We pull the permits and handle the drawings.
Pressure-Treated, Cedar or Composite
Three materials, and most people land on one of them for reasons that have nothing to do with the brochure.
Pressure-treated pine. The most popular choice right now, and the one we build most. Specifically, number two yellow pine, which is a genuinely good pressure-treated lumber and not the bargain option people assume it is.
"A lot of times what's most popular now is the pressure-treated number two yellow pine, which is a really good pressure treated."
Cedar. A natural wood, lighter than pressure-treated, and it weathers. Left alone, cedar moves from deep brown toward a soft grey over the years. Some people want exactly that and some people are surprised by it, so it is worth deciding which you are before you pick it.
Composite. The low-maintenance route. On a Norwood project we used Deckorators tongue-and-groove composite decking, paired with composite railing, specifically to keep the whole thing maintenance-free. On a Central Parkway town home we built a new porch using composite decking.
Railings
The railing is where most people spend their upgrade money, and it is the part of the deck you actually touch.
The usual upgrade is black metal. When someone wants the deck to look like more than a deck, that is normally where it goes.
Documented on our projects: RDI composite Transform railing on a Norwood porch, chosen for a maintenance-free long-term option. Black metal Wild Hog railing on an outdoor living space built with rough-sawn cedar and Versetta Stone.
New Decks and Replacements
What we do. We build new decks, and we tear out and replace decks that are past saving. Footings, framing, decking, railing and the permit work, as one job.
What we don’t. We are not the right call for deck repair, resealing or swapping out a railing on an otherwise fine deck. Those are real jobs and somebody should do them. It is not the work we are set up for, and you will get a better price on it from someone who does it every week.
Where the Materials Come From
We buy from specialty distributors, not from Home Depot or Lowe's.
On the Norwood project, every product came from Modern Builders Supply, a local Cincinnati distributor.
Permits, Drawings and Footings
You do not need to learn the permit code. Tom pulls all of his own permits. If drawings are needed, and on a deck they usually are, he gets those too. It is meant to be the hands-off part for you.
If you already have plans drawn, that works. If you do not, that works too.
We do the footings as part of the job.
Our Deck and Decking Work

Deckorators tongue-and-groove composite decking and RDI composite Transform railing, on a full exterior transformation to a modern farmhouse.

A new porch using composite decking on a town home, built for outside entertaining.

A new deck, after reframing rotted structure, with all new cedar siding and a new front door.

An outdoor living space in stained and painted wood and rough-sawn cedar, with black metal Wild Hog railing, Versetta Stone and a gas fireplace.
On each of these, the deck or decking was part of a larger exterior project.
Decks Across Greater Cincinnati
We work across Greater Cincinnati and the surrounding Tri-State area, including Northern Kentucky, Clermont, Warren and Butler counties, north to around Middletown, and around Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Deck Questions
What decking materials do you build with?
Pressure-treated pine, cedar and composite. The most popular right now is number two yellow pine, which is a genuinely good pressure-treated lumber.
Do you repair decks or reseal them?
No. We build new decks and we replace decks that are past saving. For a repair, a reseal or a railing swap on an otherwise sound deck, you want somebody who does that specific work every week.
Do I need to pull a permit myself?
No. Tom pulls all of his own permits and gets the drawings when they are needed, which on a deck they usually are. If you already have plans, that works too.
What railing options are there?
The common upgrade is black metal. We have also built with composite railing where the goal was to keep the whole deck maintenance-free.
Where do you buy your decking?
From specialty distributors, not from Home Depot or Lowe’s. On our Norwood project everything came through Modern Builders Supply, a local Cincinnati distributor.
